Stadthuys
The Stadthuys, also known as the Red Square, is a historical structure
situated in the heart of Melaka town. The building was built by the Dutch and is known to be the oldest and
biggest Dutch colonial building in Southeast Asia. Its name means ‘Municipal Town Hall’ in
Dutch.
It is famous for its red-painted buildings, and its prominent clock
tower. The Stadthuys was built in 1650, and has since been preserved in its original Dutch architectural
form. It covers about 49,000 square feet.
The Stadthuys served as a civic centre throughout the Dutch and British
rulings in Melaka. After Malaysia gained its independence, the government also used it as a State Governing
Center until 1979. It has now been converted into the History, Ethnography and Literature
Museums.
Visitors can tour the museums between 9am and 5.30pm daily except on
Friday when they close for Friday prayers from 12.15pm until 2.45pm. Admission fees is RM5 for adults and RM2
for children.
