The first thing a Malaysian would think of when hearing the word ‘Melaka’ is that it has one of the most multicultural history behind its heritage. The next thing to think of would be the delicious food it has to offer. 

 

While Melaka offers visitors great insight to historical culture, sightseers have many beautiful landmarks, restaurants, and streets to explore. Stepping into Melaka is like stepping back in to the past, being greeted by historical buildings with numerous stories to tell. 

Melaka, which was once one of the most powerful trading settlements in Southeast Asia, is bustling with multi-culture, with a mix of Chinese, Islamic, Indian and European influenced culture. These are evident in famous historical buildings like the A’Famosa, St. Paul’s church, Stadthuys and others. 

Melaka is interesting in its own way as churches, mosques and temples can be found throughout the state – some of which are amongst the oldest in the country. The Baba-Nonya culture is also strongly evident in Melaka, with a mix of Chinese and Malay influences. 

Though history thrives in Melaka, one cannot leave without getting a taste of the local cuisine, especially the Baba-Nonya style of cooking. Walking along Melaka streets, visitors can find the famed chicken ball rice, satay celup, ikan bakar and other Peranakan foods. 

If one gets hot and thirsty after exploring the city, they can cool down with a delicious refreshing bowl of ais kacang or cendol. After all, tasting great local food and exploring historical sites would be an exciting, yet relaxing adventure in Melaka.
