Melaka
Shopping
Melaka is a paradise when it comes to shopping for souvenirs, antiques,
art piecess and crafts. Famously known for its sale of antiques, Melaka has numerous shops that are widely
contrast to modern shops and malls. Meanwhile, almost every tourist attraction comes with shops, selling
beautiful souvenirs.
Shoppers can find interesting and beautiful jewellery, traditional
Baba-Nyonya material, ceramics, slippers and other items and souvenirs all over Melaka, Jonker Street being
one of the most popular shopping sites. Antique currency and old coins can also be found on sale, and there
are a few shops selling beautiful China and porcelain items.
There are also shops on Kubu Street which sells traditional Nyonya lady
costumes, shoes, and slippers, should shoppers be interested in taking home a beautiful piece of Melaka
cultural fashion. Shoppers can even get a custom pair of beautiful hand-sewn cloth embroidery slippers after
making an order.
Being known as Malaysia’s historical city, it’s not surprising to find
a huge selection of antique shops in Melaka. Visitors can have a delightful time admiring the spectacular
handcrafted furniture, the beautiful hand-made designs on clothes and linen, and other crafts dating back
from those ancient days, some of which are very valuable and of good quality.
Most of these antique shops can be found on Jalan Hang Jebat, also
known as Jonker Street, and Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock. Shoppers will be delighted to find antique furniture,
porcelain, old coins, oil lamps, traditional costumes, and various art pieces and crafts. Here, some of the
best Peranakan antiques can be found.
But do beware of traders passing fresh items off for antiques, and
remember that no price is set. Always try bargain as much as you can to get the best deals. Also, remember
that the antique dealer should have official clearance forms for visitors to fill, as not to cause any
problems when leaving the country with the antiques.
Melaka’s handicraft items would also make a great souvenir for one’s
self or one’s friends, as a memory of this historical state. Numerous shops sell beautiful traditional
pottery, art and crafts. Shoppers can find various items made of rattan, lacquer ware and
brassware.
Other crafts are such as the creative woodwork and colourful woven mats
shoppers can find on Jonker Street. There are also small souvenirs such as t-shirts, mugs, key chains and
other creative art work or crafts, all of which give visitors a taste of Malaysia as a
whole.
