Melaka’s main attraction is its beautiful architectural structures
which boast their multicultural heritages.
One of the most popular attractions is the red building, the Stadthuys,
which is believed to be the oldest Dutch building in the East. There, travellers can visit the History and
Ethnography Museum, the Literatyre Museun, the Governor’s House and the Democratic Government
Museum.
Another attraction would be Melaka’s churches, temples and mosques.
Visitors can see the St Paul’s Church and St Peter’s church, which were built by Portugese settlers. Melaka’s
Chinatown also hosts the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, which is Malaysia’s oldest Chinese temple. There is also the
150-year-old Masjid Tranquerah, in which Sultan Hussein of Johor was buried.
There are also museums to explore like the Maritime and Naval Museums,
and the Cheng Ho Cultural Museum. The Maritime museum is a ruge replica of the Flora de la Mar, a historical
Portugese ship, while its connecting Naval museum exhibits local vessels. The Cheng Ho Cultural Museum
documents the life of Chinese Ming Admiral Cheng Ho.
Other popular attractions are the Sultanate Palace,
Baba-Nonya Heritage Museum, which give insight to Sultanate and Baba-Nonya architecture and craftsmanship,
respectively. There is also St John’s Fort and the A’Famosa, both of which are merely ruins of what the
Portugese and Dutch left behind.
