The state is located about 147km from Kuala Lumpur and 245km from
Singapore. Melaka’s historic town center has a mix of Portugese, Dutch, Islamic and Chinese architecture.
These are influenced by the historical comings of the Portugese, Dutch, and
British.
Today, Melaka’s historical buildings are amongst the main tourist
attractions of the town. There is St. Paul’s Church, in which St. Francis Xavier was once buried. There is
also the infamous A’Famosa, which was a fortress built by the Portugese. The Stadthuys is also a popular
tourist attraction, being the Historic Museum and Ethnography. Another historic building is the Kampung
Keling Mosque, built in the 17th century. Melaka also hosts the Cheng Hoon Teng temple, which is
believed to be the oldest Chinese temple in the Malaysia. Melaka is also known for its heritage museums, such
as the Baba and Nonya Heritage Museum where heirlooms, art pieces, carvings and such can be viewed. Another
museum is the Maritime Museum, which is constructed like the ‘Flora De la Mar’, the Portugese ship that sank
off the Coast of Melaka on its way to Portugal.
Melaka’s colourful heritage comes with its unique selection of local
delicacies. The state is well-known for its Baba and Nonya style food, usually spicy and with a touch of
coconut milk. There are many places where visitors can indulge in the local specialities in town and the
suburban areas, some of which are even known to be the best in South East Asia. Visitors can enjoy famous
delicacies such as the “satay celup”, “ikan bakar” and chicken ball rice. Visitors can also enjoy Melaka’s
delicious deserts, such as “ais kacang”, “cendol” and “bubur chacha”. These are the few among the many other
delicious food selections.
The state is not only famous for its architecture, art and food, but
can also be a shopper’s paradise. With shopping landmarks like Jalan Hang Jebat, Jonker street, and other
historical places, visitors can bring home memorable pieces of their Melaka trip with many shops selling
artifacts, authentic antiques, local art and craft pieces, and other
